Courances Newsletter : September 2012 By Valentine de Ganay
Journées du Patrimoine caché (15-16 september.)
You think you know Courances? You have already been there? On numerous occasions?
Never mind, it contains hidden places you have never seen; you will be able to discover some of them this weekend. A new walk will be suggested, as well as guided tours of the park. You will look differently at the railings on the bridge when you know that the hero Le Surmâle by Alfred Jarry (a novel written by the author of Ubu- roi in 1902) ends up impaled on those spikes!
Do you have any idea why there were seven water fountains at the Gerbe, the 10 sided ornamental pond created during the Renaissance?
And if your children are naughty despite the fact that you have pulled them in the little carts of Courances all day long, show them the Icehouse as a threat – but then explain to them that it wasn’t meant for locking up children, but to store ice in a hole in the ground…
If you fancy having lunch in the tearoom overlooking the Japanese garden, it is recommended that you book a table. ( info@courances.net) The extraordinary swings by Liz Stirling will also be waiting for you. (Everybody wants to be photographed in “Fragonard’s Escarpolette” !)
The Falabellas (ponies smaller and nicer than Shetlands) will be available for rides for the children. I will present Matali Crasset’s baskets, the bird-catcher’s, the water- diviner’s, and the dendrologist’s (the tree lover) at 4 pm on Saturday and on Sunday. These baskets allow you to stroll around the park differently, in order to discover a heritage all the more precious as it is natural…
